alright l have a ford f-150 v8 4.6 L truck and l have to replace the upper and lower ball joints. the upper ball joint and arm came together and l know how to replace that.how do l replace the lower ball joints without any special tools.My dad works in a coal mines and we have the regular ratchets and such tools as a regular do it yourself person would

its eithee bolts or ribits or press in might need a grinder or a big hammer but a new one and you can prettyy much see it sometimes not some bad but doers take some hamering to get one out sometimes

Make sure u have the spring & A Arm locked down. I've seen too many people seriously hurt changing ball joints with not properly restraining the suspension components. Those things can take ur head or the trucks fender off if the break free. If the ball joints r riveted then u will have to cut the rivet heads & drive them out. Easy way is with an air tool. Hard way is with a sharp chisel & a big ball peen hammer. Sometimes u can use a grinder if u have enough clearance. Again, safety comes first. There is a lot of energy there just waiting for u to mess up & cut it loose.

remove the wheel,rotor,caliper as usual. if 4wd, remove the axle nut.remove pinch bolt from upper ball joint & seperate it from knuckle. remove lower b/joint nut almost all the way but dont remove.BEAT on the lower b/joint boss til the vibration makes the knuckle drop. now remove the lower nut & hang the knuckle SECURELY by a piece of wire.remove dust shield so it doesnt get bent. rt.upper control arm is a cake walk,left upper can be a little trouble getting the bolts in & out but it is possible, be careful around fuel & brake lines. lower b/joint can be removed with a BFHammer, but will have to be pressed back in. local rental place can set u up with a b/joint/ujoint press for a small fee. make sure lower b/joint is started straight before forcing it in.also, upper b/joint sleeve may be adjustable, be sure to mark its position to the top of the knuckle.its the star shaped flange above the upper b/joint .good luck

what year is it? l have a 2000 5.4 f-150. l also had to change mine it is really hard to change it with out the proper tools they press in. so you basically need the ball join press. You can rent them at your local auto parts store for free. but you have to give a $200 deposit. (they look like cups with a C clamp and its in a big box the size of a pillow)
