One day each week l have to travel 200 miles along the M6 to Cumbria
It is only a 1.6 petrol engine, but as long as the traffic is good, l travel at usually about 90mph. Occasionally i will reach 110-120mph
Is this bad for the engine? Could this be the reason im using a little more oil than usual? l am more than aware that I am speeding, the question is aimed at the health of the car, not traffic laws. ...and l know this comment will get me a lot of abuse, but i'm an excellent driver. I've done advanced driving courses, l take an RX8 to a track every 2 months or so, l have countless junior karting trophies. The problem on the roads are not the people driving fast, its the careless people who pull out without REALLY checking, or brake at every little insect that hits their windscreen.

Slow down, you will end up killing someone. The faster you drive, the LESS oil you will use though.

l do not know about the engine but it is probably bad for your life.

Yes it is bad for ur Focus. You should NEVER drive the car at more than 80% capacity if u want it to last.
Sure it is fun & it is a blast, but you're trading fun for longevity.
As for the oil question, it could be that u r pushing the poor little car is engine too much. Or u have valve failure from pushing the engine too much.
1.6 is a small engine. Unless u have a 2.0, do not go beyond 75 mph.
If u should ever get a new car keep the following in mind.
For the first 2500 miles, DO NOT. 1. Rev it beyond 4000RPM 2. Do not drive beyond 60 MPH. 3. Change ur oil at 500, 1000, 1500, 2500. Change filter too. 4. Use synthetic.
Keep in mind 3 & 4 r very important. It is pennies in comparison to the price of the car but ur car will run better in the long run.
If worse comes to worse & u hear rattling of the valves & what not, add oil additives such as Militec, Microlon Do not use the cheap ones, they work like crap. Use the best that money can buy.
Ok l need to clarify, use synthetic from the beginning till the end of ur cars life if u get a new car. Like l mentioned above, it is pennies compared to the price of the car, which in itself is almost like an investment.
Synthetic deteriorates slower & needless to say, the initial quality is higher than mineral. Compare synthetic at 3000 miles to mineral at 3000 miles. Big difference. This difference might translate to engine problem in the future. It is like an insurance.

yes. i've owned a number of compacts that when pushed above 85-95 mph would start to use oil. l am not sure if it was burning or just being thrown out of the breather valves, but they would start to go through oil.
as mentioned, u should not push a motor beyond 80% for longevity, but if u stop & look at it, ur car has a redline of around 7500 rpm, so u should not be above about 6000 rpm for extended runs.
i ran a 1.9l across MT when the speedlimit was autobahnesque at 90-100 each way a number of times. the car lasted to 470k miles, but l did have to add oil every gas stop.

Think about it. Racecars get their engines changed every race, sometimes during the same race. the reason being is bc the high speeds strain the internal parts on the engine. Too much heat & to high of velocity makes internals fail.

It is not the speed you need to worry about, it is the RPM you're running your engine at. If you are running close to the red line, you are going to shorten the life of your engine.
Poor oiling, pistons at the limit for sustained RPM -- could not be good. When you get a chance, break down the engine and build it up so handle the RPM (oil pump, different rings, lighter connecting rods, etc.).

do not listen to MissleMe. he said to use synthetic oil for the first 2500 miles. If you do this, you're going to be stuck with synthetic oil for the rest of your car is oil changes. Once that engine runs synthetic oil, theres no turning back to regular oil without major problems.
