are there 2 different Ford big block engines?

they made a 427,428,429 and 460 as far as l know

Ford has different size BB's, but only one type. They range in size from 332 ci to 460 ci.

Depends if you are limiting your question to certain time frames. The Ford 390, 428 and 460 are Ford is most popular big blocks.

There are a lot more than 2. Especially if you count Mercury, Edsel and Lincoln.

technically.the 352,360,390, 427,and 428 all use the same block with the same bore, its just the crank and rods that make the stroke difference. knowledge of this came years ago when l had one of each and with parts from all made one good motor with no machining.
now the side-oiler 427 is different also, and very rare.

the 429, 460 are different blocks with respect to the bore.

Ford big blocks include the FE series (332,352, 360, 361,390,406,410,427,428) the ''385'' engine (429,460) the ''MEL'' engines (383, 430, 462). The MEL engines were the heaviest of all of Ford is big blocks.
So, the answer is no - there are not ''2 Ford Big Blocks'' but the two l suspect you are referring to are by far the most popular - the FE series and the 385 series.

Ford has never specified between big block & small block in fact many engines that use the same bell housing bolt patterns as a 460 r well below what most would consider a big block based on c.i.d. like the 370 it shares the same exhaust configuration & will bolt to the same bell housing as a 460 but would not be considered a big block strictly on cubic inches,but most will refer to the MEL,the FE & the FT & the 385 series as big block engines the first the MEL was established & used in non Ford vehicles being the Mercury Edsel & Lincoln they were never installed in a Ford car or truck,the last two were simply a series of engines FE & 385 & they covered a wide variety of displacements from as small as a 332 FE to a 514 svo crate engine available by special order from FoMoCo but when compared to 265 v8s the 460 v8s certainly could be called Big Blocks but if u want to be honest about it Ford never distinguished them or referred to any series of engines it produced as a Big Block.
