l am buying a 1997 Ford Explorer tomorrow and l wanna know how powerful the engine is. It is a 5.0L V8. How is the pick-up/acceleration? Will it be good on the highways if l need to pass someone up. Thanks!

although it is not very powerful; the 5.0 can be a monster of a motor if put together correctly.

l had over 350 horsepower on my 5.0 mustang BEFORE l added a supercharger on her.

My dad has the same year engine in an F-150 which l drive. It can go if it needs to, but it is no muscle car. On the other side it sure is a lot faster than our other 4-cylinder car.

my 97 with the SOHC V6 has 210 hp and is just as fast, they both have power to pass..

not bad on power but everything can be upgrade as u get some extra cash

well the mountaineers & ford explorers came with the ford gt40p heads. this makes mustang lovers cringe because mustangs did not come with them. they r a common upgrade from the H.O.heads that mustangs come with. That, along with the HO intake that it comes with, l believe it is rated at around 240hp stock which is about 20hp more than the 90s mustangs tha have the same motor..the 4.0 liter was just fine for it & that 5.0 is really an overkill, but it will tow pretty hefty boats & trailers (with some helper springs) if ur into that. hope this helps.
